Oliver Joseph “Sonny” Schamel, 90, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in NC following a brief illness, on Saturday, February 13, 2021. The son of the late Oliver and Marcella (Zahn) Schamel, he was born on June 26, 1930 in Dayton, OH. Sonny served in the United States Army during the Korean War in Regensburg, Germany.
Sonny was a true salesman. There wasn’t anything he could not sell from his as a salesman at Lotz Paper Co. to Streetman, to Lysol, to Keeble and finally to Little Debbie. He loved to talk to people! In retirement, he opened and ran Jackie’s Trains and Gifts in which he sold & installed train sets. Aside from his love of trains he was an avid boater and was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Sonny’s family included 6 children, 11 grandchildren (GC) and 28 great-grandchildren- Oliver, Jr. (deceased); Debra Schamel (Tony Rush) Baltimore, MD; GC’s Erika Mayhew & LTC Nik Ziegler; David Schamel (deceased); GC’s Jason Schamel & Sarah Cannarozza; Diana Alkassimy (deceased); Donna Kern (Matt Kern) Toledo, OH; GC’s Amanda Coffer, Rocko Kern, Kyle, Kern and Alex Kern; Darva Holder (Don Holder) Hubert, NC; GC’s Nathan Collins, Logan Holder and Marcus Holder.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arva Lee Schamel abd second wife, Jackie Schamel and his sister, Rita Drummer.
