On Thursday, March 25, 2021, Maj. Stephen “Steve” Patrick Gholson (USMC, RET) took his final dirt bike ride in Sumter, South Carolina. Steve was born in Huntsville, AL, on March 15, 1966, to Donald Patrick Gholson and Sandra Hanks Gholson. He attended East Carolina University and studied

Following retirement, he worked as a Systems Analyst for Corps Solutions on Camp Lejeune, continuing his passion of working with Marines. Steve created his dirt bike desert racing team, BackSwamp Racing, with a close group of friends and chased a dream of completing the Score International Baja 1000. He raced every year since 2015; from the Imperial Valley 250, Rosarito Beach Desert Challenge, Tijuana Desert Challenge, and twice racing the Baja 1000.

He said that we are not guaranteed tomorrow, so make time to fulfill your dreams.

Steve’s character was marked by an intense loyalty to friends and family, an unwavering sense of duty to his country, and a love for the finer things in life: his dirt bikes, beerquilas, and dog.
