On Thursday, March 25, 2021, Maj. Stephen “Steve” Patrick Gholson (USMC, RET) took his final dirt bike ride in Sumter, South Carolina. Steve was born in Huntsville, AL, on March 15, 1966, to Donald Patrick Gholson and Sandra Hanks Gholson. He attended East Carolina University and studied
Political Science before joining the Marine Corps. Steve proudly served our country in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, earning a Bronze Star and Marine Corps Expeditionary Ribbon in addition to other awards during his 21 years of service.
Following retirement, he worked as a Systems Analyst for Corps Solutions on Camp Lejeune, continuing his passion of working with Marines. Steve created his dirt bike desert racing team, BackSwamp Racing, with a close group of friends and chased a dream of completing the Score International Baja 1000. He raced every year since 2015; from the Imperial Valley 250, Rosarito Beach Desert Challenge, Tijuana Desert Challenge, and twice racing the Baja 1000.
He said that we are not guaranteed tomorrow, so make time to fulfill your dreams.
A Mass will be said Thursday at 11 AM at Infant of Prague Catholic Church, burial will follow in Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery . The Family will receive friends Wednesday from 6- 8pm at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother Sandra Hanks Gholson. He is survived by his wife, Camilla Lanoza Gholson, daughter Maria Elena Gholson, and son Donald Patrick Gholson II; father, Donald Patrick Gholson, sister, Elizabeth Gholson, and Aunt Deborah Charnley.
Steve’s character was marked by an intense loyalty to friends and family, an unwavering sense of duty to his country, and a love for the finer things in life: his dirt bikes, beerquilas, and dog.
He fought the good fight. He won the race. He kept the faith.
