JACKSONVILLE - Susan Ann Singletary was born June 6, 1949 in Greensboro, NC to Rev. Dr. G. Howard and Florence Allred. She graduated from Concord High School, High Point University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she earned a master’s degree in education for special needs students. Susan worked at Northeast Junior High School, Central High School, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, UNCW, and Coastal Carolina Community College. Susan was twice named Educator of the Year at Coastal.
Susan’s father was a pastor in the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference and the family lived in Pelham, Draper, Gastonia, Concord, Asheboro, Thomasville, Madison and High Point.
Susan is survived by her husband, Ronald Brooks Singletary. Her children Cathryn Ronan and her husband David, Lauren Ambrose and her husband Andrew, five grandsons, Bryce, Cormac, Kaine, and Jacob Ronan, Brooks Ambrose, and one granddaughter, Mae Ambrose.
Donald Howard Allred, Susan’s brother, and his wife Pat live in Asheboro, NC. Her sister, Laura Allred, lives in Wilmington. Nieces and nephews are Dustin Howard Allred, Susan Elizabeth Allred Oyarzun, Samantha Ann Allred, and Zachary Howard Allred.
Susan loved her family, her friends, her church and her students. She was known as the master director of many family pageants.
She loved the United Methodist Church. She served in many capacities as Sunday School teacher and member of various committees. Her favorite contribution was to the United Methodist Women who she served as president for many years.
Susan loved working with students and teachers. There was much joy for her to see students grow and teachers flourish.
Susan passed on April 25, 2022. A visitation will be held at Jones Funeral Home on Sunday, May 1st from 5-7pm. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 2nd at 2pm at Trinity United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, NC.
