Dalton Wayne
"Woody" Wood Sr
November 17, 1939 – February 23, 2021
Swansboro- Dalton Wayne "Woody" Wood, Sr., 81, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2021 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born November 17, 1939 in Fort Barnwell, NC.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Rudolph Outlaw and Rev. Stephen Petty officiating. Burial will follow at Seaside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
Woody's life was filled with more jobs, careers, hobbies and stories than one can count. He worked as a mechanic on and off throughout his eight decades, including working with his son Wayne in Swansboro. He made his way up the ladder at the shipyard in Morehead City where he worked up from the "clean up gang" all the way to certified lead man over the welders, a fact he was very proud of.
Woody traveled the southeast as an owner/operator of a dump truck. He hauled rock and asphalt, helping to build highways from North Carolina to Georgia and Florida and all around the south. He also owned and operated The Geiger Gulf service stations and Woody's 258 Truck Stop in Jacksonville with his loving wife. They also raised hogs and rabbits for a time on their farm in Swansboro.
Never a man short of work ethic, Woody was a jack of all trades and a master of them as well. He could fix any truck, tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, of excavator that was brought to him. He never had much down time but when he did he was a member of the Seaside Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, and a member of the Scottish rite.
A true example of a people person, he never met a stranger. Quick with a joke, and with wit as sharp as barbed wire, he made friends with the majority of Onslow County in his time here. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucille Melville Wood of the home; son, Dalton Wayne Wood, Jr. (Kim) of Swansboro; daughter, Deborah Lucille Watson of Swansboro; grandchildren, Tyler Wood of Raleigh and Nicole Hochheimer (Steven) of Harlem, GA; great grandchildren, Madelyn, Mason, and Maddox; sister, Susan Riley (John) of Santa Maria, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
