Retired MGySgt John George Bodnarik

27 June 1941 – 24 August 2024

SWANSBORO  -  Retired MGySgt John George Bodnarik, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and brother to ten siblings, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on Saturday, August 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.  Graveside funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will receive friends Monday, September 2, 2024 from 6 - 8 PM at Jones Funeral Home, Swansboro Chapel.

Born June 27, 1941, Mr. Bodnarik dedicated his life to his country, treasured his family, and had a deep passion for the outdoors.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Sandra M. Bodnarik. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. He leaves behind five children: Johnny Bodnarik, Jody Brisson and her husband Mark, Jeff Bodnarik and his wife Amy, Jackie Bodnarik and her husband Vaughn Martin, and Jennifer Whited and her husband Steven. His legacy of love continues through his seven grandchildren: Mark Brisson, Sarah Brisson, Tyler Bodnarik, Ryan Bodnarik, Nathan Whited, Leah Bodnarik, and Marissa Martin, as well as his two great-grandchildren, Forrest Brisson and Ameliyah Martin.

John will undoubtably be remembered for his "larger-than-life" personality, which was especially apparent during the holidays.  He was Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Candy Man, and the master of ceremonies during his annual 4th of July firework display. He never missed a year no matter what obstacles stood in his way.  This was a true testament to his selfless approach to life and desire to please the ones around him. He loved hard, played hard, and lived hard, up to the very end.

A devoted military man, John held his service to his country close to his heart. He found great satisfaction and joy in the simplicity of life's pleasures, whether it was casting a line with his brother and grandchildren, tending to his garden, feeding the wildlife in his yard, or sharing stories with loved ones.  John's kindness, strength, wisdom, and unwavering spirit will be remembered by all who knew him. His legacy will live on through the countless memories that he helped create and the love that he shared in the process.

John entered active duty on 24 August 1959, re-enlisted on 24 August 1970, and was called up for his last mission on 24 August 2024.  He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of his family and friends.
