Swansboro - Larry Wayne Cooke passed away at his home in Swansboro, North Carolina on Friday, April 29th at the age of 67. Larry is survived by his loving wife, Jennie, of 47 years. They were married on July 22, 1969. Larry is lovingly remembered by his stepfather Bernard Morris, his two sons, Ron Cooke and wife Rachel, Derek Cooke and wife Laura, seven grandchildren, three brothers, Gerald Cooke and wife Judy, A.W. Cooke and wife Rhonda, and Monte Morris, two sisters, Carolyn Ricks, Sissy Spencer and husband Tim, fifteen nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Maggie Morris, and his brothers Murl and Arnold Cooke. Larry was born in Bath, North Carolina on July 30, 1948. He graduated from Bath High School in 1966 and went on to earn a computer science degree in 1971. Larry enlisted in the Army out of high school and served in the Vietnam War as an Airborne Infantry soldier, where he was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He served an exemplary 23 years in the Army, retiring as a Battalion Sargent Major in 1990. Larry enjoyed his family around him, working in his yard, collecting coins, reading about politics and history, Pepsi-floats, tossing baseballs to his grandchildren, fishing, grilling steaks, riding his dog around in his truck, and UNC basketball.
A graveside service and Celebration of his Life will be held at his place of birth and family plot 4377 Kelly Road, Bath, NC where he will be laid to rest at 1pm on Wednesday, May 4th . Flowers can be sent to 402 Tidal Ct Swansboro NC 28548, or in lieu of flowers you may donate to your favorite charity. All family and friends are welcome.
