Obituary

JACKSONVILLE - Mrs. Mabel Howell Munch went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 22, 2010. A Celebration of her life will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville with Rev. Lawrence Cole officiating. Burial will follow at Jacksonville City Cemetery.
Mrs. Mabel was the wife of the late Samuel A. Munch, Sr. and step-mother to Samuel A. Munch, Jr.
She was born on May 26, 1914 to Lellie Spruill Howell and David B. Howell in Weldon, NC. Mrs. Mabel married Samuel A. Munch on May 30, 1945 and moved to Midway Park on Camp Lejeune. She was active in women's clubs, garden clubs, and bridge clubs of both Midway Park and Jacksonville. She was also a member of an investment club and a birthday group.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville for over 50 years and was extremely active in every aspect of service and worship and an extremely strong supporter of the Youth of FBC.
In the middle 1950's, she and her husband, managed the Jacksonville Airport and the S&W Drive-In on Highway 24. They were charter members of the Jacksonville Country Club and were very active in the golf course and club management. When she resigned from the Country Club, she was the oldest charter member still active.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Mr. & Mrs. David B. Howell; her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Howell; her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Torbert; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Jennett V. Howell.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel A. Munch, Jr, of Fort Walton Beach, FL; their daughters, Terri A. Munch of New York City, NY and Traci Susan Munch Welsh and her husband, Johnny Welsh of Columbia, MD. Surviving nieces and their husbands are Carolyn Howell (Charles) Clement, Patsy Howell (Glen) Cuthrell, Susan Howell (Tom) Gizinski and Joanne Howell (Alex) Hallmark and a cousin, Ann Pierce Dixon.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Mabel has requested that in lieu of flowers, that interested persons please make memorials to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1985 Gum Branch Rd., Jacksonville, NC 28540.
